Call to worship

Come brothers and sisters to celebrate new life in Christ.

All are welcome to lay their burdens down at the feet of God’s throne.

All are invited to share in his mercies.

All are beloved of Him and all are offered His Grace.

Come.

Amen

Psalm 34

Prayers of praise

Gracious God,

As we look around we see the many blessings of your world

The love of others, your face reflected in the kindness of those we meet.

The sorrows of others, broken hearted like you for the griefs of the world.

The tears of those who have allowed themselves to be moved as you are

and the joys of those who have discovered your love.

Amen

Prayers of absolution

Lord, you have loved us.

Lord, you have known us.

Lord, you have forgiven us.

In the world where Christ walked there is no longer shame or sorrow, there is no room for the victory of sin.

God’s attitude to us is already one of forgiveness, hope and grace.

We confess our sins before God.

Silence

Amen.

Lamentations 3: 19-26

Prayers of Intercession

As we wander in the darkness

Lord preserve us

As we struggle to seek you

Lord preserve us

As the world strives for peace, not violence and compassion, not greed

Lord preserve us

As our neighbours confront sickness, distress and death

Lord preserve us

As many go to sleep afraid, unsure and alone

Lord preserve us

Amen

The blessing of the meal

Because of you infinite goodness

We have food to eat

and water to drink.

May we be sustained for your purpose and your love.

Ever remembering you as the source of all life.

And rejoicing always in your love.

Amen

John 11:17-44

We each wash the feet of the person to the right whilst singing or holding silence

Blessing

The name of the Lord is a mighty fortress

His love is unending and offered to all.

Eternal and gracious God

Bless and keep us.

Amen.

Opening Prayer

The summer is full of stillness,

The shimmering air of early evening,

Speak to us here Lord.

The summer is full of excitement,

Expectation and bursts of colour in the hedgerows,

Speak to us here Lord.

Amen

 –

Prayers of adoration

For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.[1]

Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.[2]

Hear this, you kings! Listen, you rulers! I, even I, will sing to the LORD; I will praise the LORD, the God of Israel, in song.[3]

 –

Prayers of Thanksgiving

Using a prayer tree, write on luggage labels all the things you want to thank the Lord for, especially the gifts He gives us in summer. Tie them to the tree, a symbol of God’s creation.

Children of God:

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.[4]

 –

Prayers of Confession

Father we remember our sins before you. We confess them and repent.

Time of silence

We ask for Your forgiveness, gracious God, beloved Master. Have mercy on us Lord.

As we enjoy the many many blessings of summertime we confess those times when heat gets the better of us and we react rashly and in anger. We admit that we allow stress and discomfort to inform us, instead of love, and don’t treat others as we would wish to be treated.

As we enjoy the glories of Your creation, we confess that we fall short of the standard of stewardship You desire from us. Help us to care for the earth and to respect the might and power of nature. We are far removed from the realities of relying on the natural world; help us to understand what it means to live in harmony with Your world.

Amen

 –

Prayers of Intercession

As we enjoy the summer sun, we pray for those who suffer from drought and starvation. We pray for those involved in making environmental decisions, who legislate on climate change. We pray for those who are climate refugees, who suffer from our abuses of the natural world. Remember, LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.[5]

As we delight in the sweet taste of water to quench our thirst, we pray for those who cannot access clean water, who fear for their lives and the lives of their children. Remember, LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.

As we enjoy friendship and freedom, we pray for those who are enslaved or alone. Those who have been isolated or are surrounded by oppression. Remember, LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.

As the sun and the joys of endless hazy days lift our hearts, we pray for those struggling with doubt, depression and grief and who are unable to enjoy the delights of God’s creation as we do. Remember, LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.

Amen

1The LORD said to Moses, 2“speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the LORD your God am holy…’”

Prayer of Adoration

The Lord is mighty and powerful. Holy is His name.

He is our creator, our sustainer, our strength, our redemption and our hope. Holy is His name.

In Him is perfect love, perfect grace and perfect peace. Holy is His name.

He is the source of all that is good, glorious and righteous. Holy is His name.

We thank You Father and praise You for Your everlasting love. Holy is Your name. Amen.

Prayers of Confession

You tell us to be holy and to live lives of love. We confess that we are often too quick to take the easy way out and give up when holiness and a loving nature become too difficult. Forgive us and make us holy we pray.

You have given us the blessing of holiness, the ability to know You and follow Your ways. Even though You offer us the best the world has to offer, we confess that we prefer our own ways and ignore the gift You’ve given us. Forgive us and make us holy we pray.

We confess we forget what holiness means. We fill our lives with religious trappings and condemn those whose “unholiness” is easy to pick out and those who can be marginalised and neglected; the drug addict, the prostitute, the corrupt politician. We confess that we wallow in a false sense of purity and righteousness and that we too have sinned. Forgive us and make us holy we pray.

We have spoken unkindly and not acted in love. We have not seen our brothers and sisters as You see them and have failed to treat them as sons and daughters of the King. Forgive us and make us holy we pray.

We have made the land and the blessings of nature impure through our abuses of it and our selfishness. We have no been good stewards of Your earth, we have not treated it as Your holy ground.  Forgive us and make us holy we pray.

The Lord tells us we are forgiven: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:23-34)

Discussion: What does it mean for a person, a place or an action to be holy? What does God mean when he says we should be holy BECAUSE He is holy?

Prayers of Supplication

Loving Father, help us to be holy. We ask for Your assistance in making us more like You; more loving, more trustworthy, more kind and more generous. Lord, in Your mercy, hear us.

Creator God, we know there are many places in the world where people are forced to live in a way that does not reflect Your plan for Your creation. You created us in a holy garden, bursting with gifts and blessings. We remember before You those whose lives are far removed from that paradise; those who are alone, bereaved, frightened and in danger. Those who are starving or persecuted. Those who live in unspeakable conditions and suffer unimaginable pain. Lord, in Your mercy, hear us.

Mighty Redeemer, We pray for those in power and authority. May they seek wisdom and righteousness, serving You and their people rather than themselves and their own interests. Lord, in Your mercy, hear us.

Master and Lord, we pray for those we know to be suffering in body, mind and spirit and those whose condition is known only to You. We pray especially for those who have been hurt by us, when our actions did not reflect Your love. Lord, in Your mercy, hear us.

(a time of silent prayer for our own intercessions.) Lord, in Your mercy, hear us. Amen.

Readings: 1 Corinthians 13:8-12, Revelation 21:1-5.

The Lord’s Prayer.

Blessing

Father, keep us in faith, hope and love we pray. May we grow in Your likeness, ever striving to serve You. In the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Amen.

Reflection: In what areas of our lives are we challenged by this passage from Leviticus?

Prayers of Approach and Thanksgiving

Lord, we proclaim Your greatness through all the earth: Father, you are mighty and glorious.

You are our creator and sustainer, in You alone we have life: Father, you are mighty and glorious.

We are nothing without You, Almighty God, Your love is our life blood, Your mercy our heartbeat: Father, you are mighty and glorious.

Thank You Father! Thank You for the blessings of Your creation: Father, you are mighty and glorious.

Thank You Father! Thank You for the blessings of Fellowship: Father, you are mighty and glorious.

Thank You Father! Thank you for the blessings of Your Grace: Amen

Reading: Daniel 9:4-10,  17-19

4“Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. 6 We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.

7 “Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you. 8 We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, LORD, because we have sinned against you. 9 The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; 10 we have not obeyed the LORD our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.

17 “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favour on your desolate sanctuary. 18 Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”

Prayers of Confession

You created us to love one another, to serve and forgive each other. We have fallen short of this gift of fellowship you presented us with. We confess it Father and beg Your forgiveness.

You created us to love You, to worship You and live as Your children. We have fallen short of the Glory you offer us every day. We confess it Father and beg Your forgiveness.

You created us and gave us the earth to live in and to care for. We have fallen far short of the gratitude such a gift deserves.  We confess it Father and beg Your forgiveness.

You created each one of us in Your image, treasured and loved, with individual gifts and talents. We have fallen short of seeing our brothers and sisters in this light. We confess it Father and beg Your forgiveness. Amen

Prayers of Petition- Take a few minutes to lift your personal petitions to God. If you wish, use the ribbons and prayer tree. Each ribbon you tie onto the tree will represent a prayer, in a moment of quiet later you may want to take a moment of quiet by yourself and honour the prayers represented here.

Loving God, we pray for those who have been in the news this week, for the desolate and the broken around the world struggling in war, debt and famine. For those who are bereaved and those living in fear. We pray for those we know to be suffering in body, mind and spirit and those who condition is known only to You. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Silence

Reading: 1 John 1:3-7

3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.4 We write this to make our joy complete. 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

The Lord’s Prayer

The Blessing (Colossians 3:15,17)

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Reading:  Matthew 4:1-11

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Praise

Father, during this time of Lent, of preparation, we thank you for the Glory of Easter and for your unfailing Love and Grace. We thank you for our fellowship, for our freedom and for the many many privileges and blessings we enjoy. Rejoice in the Lord always, again, I say rejoice.

Thank you that you are a perfect mother and father, to us and to the whole world. We praise you for Your Glory, Your compassion and the gift of Your Word and guidance. We ask for the wisdom and confidence to respond to Your mercy and Your call. Rejoice in the Lord always, again, I say rejoice. Amen.

Prayers of Confession

Almighty Father, we confess that we do not always see people as You see them, we ignore those we find uncomfortable, irritating or difficult to get on with. We confess that we do not always speak and act in love. We fail to treat others as we would like to be treated, we are unkind, unthinking and unsympathetic. To often we are selfish and do not think before we speak.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Creator of the universe, we confess that we have neglect to do all you command, that we fill our time with worldly entertainment and focus and pretend not to hear your voice. We confess we do not always seek justice and peace, preferring our own plans and ideas. We fall short of all you created us and intend us to be.

Lord, have mercy on us.

“Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws.” (Daniel 9:5)

Lord, have mercy on us. Amen

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all… If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:5, 9) Amen.

Call to worship

Come sinners to the Gospel feast

Let every soul be Jesu’s guest;

Ye need not one be left behind

For God hath bidden all mankind. Amen.

(Charles Wesley)

Prayers of confession and absolution

Lord God, our Father and Creator,

You know the contents of our hearts,

You see all.

We commend ourselves to Your mercy and Your Grace,

Knowing that much of what You see in us falls short of Your Glory.

We confess we do not always love You with all our hearts, all our souls and all our minds.

We refuse to listen to and serve you, preferring our own counsel and the praise of the world.

We confess we do not always love our neighbours as ourselves.

We act unkindly, selfishly and take people for granted, we do not see people as You see them.

We beg Your forgiveness for those times we have not loved others as You love us.

Silence in which we confess our sins before God

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us

Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us

Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace.

We are reminded of Peter’s protestations before the Lord, when he exclaims “Go away from me Lord; I am a sinful man”. We can be overwhelmed and burdened by the knowledge of our own wrongdoing but we remember also Christ’s response “Don’t be afraid”.

Father, instead of being overwhelmed by our sin, let us be overwhelmed by Your Grace , Your Love and Your Forgiveness. Praise the Lord!

Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother

May we know you more clearly,

Love you more dearly,

And follow you more nearly

Amen. (St Richard of Chichester)

Intercessions for our brothers and sisters around the world- as each prayer is read, think of someone you know or know of who is suffering in this way. Pray also for those whose condition is known only to God.

For those who feel weak, isolated and alone. For those who feel like life’s not worth living. For those who live in fear, who only see their sin and not their created nature. For those who cannot love themselves, those who hurt themselves, those who starve themselves and those who try and take their own lives. God of Compassion, hear the prayer of Your servant.

For those who are grieving and lonely. For those who don’t know the whereabouts of their loved ones or whether they’ll ever see them again. For those coming to terms with unbelievable loss and the pain of bereavement. God of Compassion, hear the prayer of Your servant.

For those caught up in war and violence. For the innocent and the unarmed. For those who risk their lives for a cause they believe in. For peacemakers and soldiers. For the injured and the dying. God of Compassion, hear the prayer of Your servant.

For those in authority, may they act wisely and with an attitude of humility. May they act for the good of those they have responsibility for, not for the needs and wants of the wealthy minority. For those who were involved in our own student elections, for the victorious and the disappointed. For those who govern this country, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and the rest of parliament. God of Compassion, hear the prayer of Your servant.

For those in the news this week. For those we know to be suffering in body, mind and spirit and those whose anguish is known only to You. God of Compassion, hear the prayer of Your servant. Amen.

Reading: Micah 7:14-20

14 Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, which lives by itself in a forest, in fertile pasturelands. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead as in days long ago.  15 “As in the days when you came out of Egypt, I will show them my wonders.” 16 Nations will see and be ashamed, deprived of all their power. They will put their hands over their mouths and their ears will become deaf.  17 They will lick dust like a snake, like creatures that crawl on the ground. They will come trembling out of their dens; they will turn in fear to the LORD our God and will be afraid of you. 18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. 19 You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.  20 You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago.

The Lord’s Prayer

Affirmation

11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. (1 John 4:11-12)

Blessing and Thanksgiving

The seed of God is in us.

Now, the seed of a pear tree grows into a pear tree;

And a hazel seed grows into a hazel tree;

A seed of God grows into God (Meister Eckhart)

May we water and nourish our own seeds and those of everyone we meet. Amen.

Jeremiah 7:5-10

Reading

Thus says the LORD:

Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals

and make mere flesh their strength,

whose hearts turn away from the LORD.

They shall be like a shrub in the desert,

and shall not see when relief comes.

They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness,

in an uninhabited salt land.

Blessed are those who trust in the LORD,

whose trust is the LORD.

They shall be like a tree planted by water,

sending out its roots by the stream.

It shall not fear when heat comes,

and its leaves shall stay green;

in the year of drought it is not anxious,

and it does not cease to bear fruit.

The heart is devious above all else;

it is perverse—

who can understand it?

I the LORD test the mind

and search the heart,

to give to all according to their ways,

according to the fruit of their doings. Jeremiah 7:5-10

Prayer

Father,

Search our hearts.

Assist us to recognise and repent of those things which offend You and Your creation.

We confess we are wayward, we often choose to heed our own voice over Your plans for us.

We are not like the tree by water.

We let our hearts be deserts, dry and withered.

We submit ourselves to Your mercy Lord,

And beg for Your forgiveness.

Ignite us with the Water of Life so our hearts may bear Your fruit.

We confess our trust falters;

Strengthen us we pray.

Amen

Responses

Father, you are our creator and sustainer

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

You made the light, the heavens and life in all its fullness

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

In You is our hope, our joy, our redemption and our purpose

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Help us to trust in You and You alone

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Make us trees by the lake of Your living water

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Save us from the desert land, from the wilderness of a hungry, anguished heart

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

May we see Your love before us and behind us

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Search my heart Lord and lead me to the greatest love of all

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Amen

Blessing

As we walk through the desert

As we rest by the lake

May the Lord show us

His Mercy

His Grace

His Love

Even in the depths of the black abyss

And to the highest vaults of the star speckled skies.

Amen.
